Huge plumes of smoke could be seen rising from the Lebanese capital today after Israel fired a series of rockets into Beirut.

The Israeli Defence Force says it was targeting what it said was Hezbollah's headquarters and its leader Hassan Nasrallah. It’s unclear whether he was in the building and whether or not he survived the attack.

The IDF also issued warnings to people living in parts of the southern suburbs of Beirut to leave their homes after growing signals that Israel may be preparing a ground offensive in Lebanon.

Iran, which backs the Hezbollah militia group, called the latest bombing a “dangerous, game-changing escalation”.

The strikes came hours after Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu gave a defiant speech to the UN General Assembly in New York. He made no reference to US calls for an immediate ceaseffire between Israel and Hezbollah and instead vowed to keep fighting, telling world leaders at the United Nations “we are winning".

Tributes are being paid to Dame Maggie Smith who has died at the age of 89.

A legend of British stage and screen, Dame Maggie won two Oscars during her career - for The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie in 1970 and California Suite in 1979.

She was known to many as Professor Minvera McGonagall in the Harry Potter films.

In hit ITV drama Downton Abbey, she played Violet Crawley, the Dowager Countess of Grantham, the grand matriarch who excelled at withering one-liners through the show's six series.

Leading the tributes, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said Dame Maggie "was beloved by so many for her great talent, becoming a true national treasure whose work will be cherished for generations to come".

An NHS surgeon who has volunteered for over fifty humanitarian missions worldwide has told the BBC that his recent visit to Gaza was the worst situation he's ever encountered.

Dr Ammar Darwish said that he saw "horrors unparallelled" to anywhere else he’d worked in.

Israel says it follows international law and takes feasible precautions to mitigate civilian harm.

They said they evacuated the area around the hospital as part of an anti-terror operation - but told the hospital itself that it needn’t evacuate.

JERUSALEM, Israel – After 11 months of fighting between Israel and Hezbollah, a number of nations, including the U.S. called for a 21-day ceasefire with Hezbollah and in Gaza. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who was flying to the U.S., flatly rejected the ceasefire plan, saying Israel will continue to fight.

President Joe Biden told reporters about the ceasefire proposal.

"We were able to generate significant support from Europe as well as the Arab nations. It's important the war does not widen," Biden stated.

Militer Israel mengeklaim telah membunuh pemimpin Hizbullah Hassan Nasrallah dalam sebuah serangan di Beirut, Lebanon, Sabtu (28/09).

Nasrallah adalah salah satu tokoh paling terkenal dan paling berpengaruh di Timur Tengah. Nasrallah tak terlihat di depan publik selama bertahun-tahun karena kekhawatiran akan dibunuh oleh Israel.

Hizbullah mengonfirmasi Nasrallah tewas dalam serangan udara di Beirut, dengan mengatakan kematiannya terjadi "setelah serangan Zionis yang berbahaya di pinggiran selatan".

Hezbollah has confirmed the death of its leader Hassan Nasrallah after Israeli strikes on Beirut.

Nasrallah, who had not been seen in public for years because of fears of being assassinated by Israel, was one of the best-known and most influential figures in the Middle East.

Israelis expressed joy and relief on Saturday (September 28) after learning of Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah’s death.

Be it in the deserted streets of northern Nahariya, as Shabbat was underway, or on the bustle seaside of Tel Aviv, people were unanimous in rejoicing at the long awaited news.

The Iran-backed group confirmed Nasrallah had been killed on Saturday, a few hours after the Israeli military said it had eliminated him in an airstrike in Beirut the day before.

His death marks a devastating blow to Hezbollah as it reels from an escalating campaign of Israeli attacks.

It is also a huge blow to Iran, given the major role he has played in the Tehran-backed regional "Axis of Resistance."

Hezbollah said in a statement that it would continue its battle against Israel "in support of Gaza and Palestine, and in defence of Lebanon and its steadfast and honourable people."

It did not say how Nasrallah was killed.

The Israeli military said earlier that Nasrallah was eliminated in a "targeted strike" on Friday (September 27) on the group's underground headquarters beneath a residential building in Dahiyeh - a Hezbollah-controlled southern suburb of Beirut. - report from Reuters

The IDF intercepted a missile fired by the Houthi rebels in Yemen, the military said late on Thursday after sirens were heard in many communities surrounding the Tel Aviv metropolitan area, the central plains, and the city of Modi'in.

Earlier Hezbollah said its senior commander of the terror group's aerial forces Mohammed Srur who was killed in a targeted strike on a 10-story building in Beirut's Dahieh, had recently returned to Lebanon from Yemen where he had been training the Houthi rebels.

Netanyahu also slammed Hezbollah for its history of murder blaming it for killing people from nations all around the world insisting, "Enough is enough!".

Hezbollah Leader Hassan Nasrallah Death: आतंकी संगठन हिजबुल्लाह ने अपने प्रमुख हसन नसरल्लाह के मौत की पुष्टि की है. इससे पहले इजरायली सेना ने दावा किया था कि शुक्रवार को एक हवाई हमले में नसरल्लाह मारा गया. आईडीएफ ने अपनी आधिकारिक सोशल मीडिया साइट एक्स पर इस संबंध में एक पोस्ट साझा करते हुए कहा, "हसन नसरल्लाह अब दुनिया को आतंकित नहीं कर पाएगा."

कौन था हसन नसरल्लाह?

हसन नसरल्लाह ने अपने नेतृत्व में हिजबुल्लाह को एक राजनीतिक और सैन्य संगठन के तौर पर स्थापित किया, जिसने लेबनान के राजनीतिक परिदृश्य में एक अहम भूमिका निभाई थी. 15 साल की उम्र में नसरल्लाह ने लेबनान में अमाल आंदोलन का सदस्य बनने का फैसला लिया था. 16 साल की उम्र में वे इराक पहुंचे और वहां दो साल तक रहे.

महज 22 साल की उम्र में नसरल्लाह ने हिजबुल्लाह में शामिल होकर संगठन के लिए अपनी प्रतिबद्धता दिखाई. 1992 में अब्बास मूसवी की हत्या के बाद नसरल्लाह को हिजबुल्लाह का प्रमुख बनाया गया. नसरल्लाह ने हिजबुल्लाह के राजनीतिक और सैन्य विंग को मजबूत किया, जिससे संगठन की लेबनान के चुनाव, राजनीति और सरकार में हिस्सेदारी बढ़ी. उनकी ईरान के साथ घनिष्ठ दोस्ती ने हिजबुल्लाह की सैन्य शक्ति को और बढ़ाया. 2000 के बाद, उन्होंने इजरायल के खिलाफ सैन्य कार्रवाइयों की योजना बनाई.

2006 का इजरायली-हिजबुल्लाह युद्ध

Hezbollah has confirmed the death of its leader, Hassan Nasrallah, after a series of massive Israeli airstrikes on Lebanon’s capital Beirut. Nasrallah, who had not been seen in public for years because of fears of being assassinated by Israel, was one of the most influential figures in the Middle East.

Ali Karki, the commander of Hezbollah’s southern front, and other Hezbollah military leaders were also killed in the attack on Beirut’s southern suburb of Dahiyeh, according to the Israeli military.

Hezbollah confirmed Nasrallah’s death and vowed to keep up the fight against Israel “in support of Gaza and Palestine, and in defence of Lebanon”. Iran, the main backer of Hezbollah, declared five days of national mourning. Iran’s Supreme Leader declared that Nasrallah’s death "will not go unavenged"

Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said his country had “settled the score” with Nasrallah’s death and described his assassination as an “historic turning point” which could reshape the region.

US President Joe Biden said that his death was a "measure of justice for his many victims” and Kamala Harris described Nasrallah as a “terrorist” with blood on his hands.

Western countries are warning citizens to leave Lebanon as the assassination fuels fears of a wider war. Israel has strongly signalled that it may send ground forces into Lebanon. Thousands of Lebanese citizens are continue to flee the south of the country.

Lebanon’s Hezbollah group confirmed Saturday that its leader and one of its founders, Hassan Nasrallah, was killed in an Israeli airstrike in Beirut.

Nasrallah, who led Hezbollah for more than three decades, is by far the most powerful target to be killed by Israeli in weeks of intensified fighting with the Shiite militant group.

The Israeli military said it carried out a precise airstrike on Friday while Hezbollah leadership met at their headquarters in Dahiyeh, south of Beirut.

It is not immediately clear what effect Nasrallah’s death will have on Hezbollah or on the fighting between the two sides, which has dragged on for nearly a year.
