Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah killed in Israeli airstrike

Lebanon’s Hezbollah group confirmed Saturday that its leader and one of its founders, Hassan Nasrallah, was killed in an Israeli airstrike in Beirut.

Nasrallah, who led Hezbollah for more than three decades, is by far the most powerful target to be killed by Israeli in weeks of intensified fighting with the Shiite militant group.

The Israeli military said it carried out a precise airstrike on Friday while Hezbollah leadership met at their headquarters in Dahiyeh, south of Beirut.

It is not immediately clear what effect Nasrallah’s death will have on Hezbollah or on the fighting between the two sides, which has dragged on for nearly a year.
