But it comes at a very high cost for the Kremlin – by some estimates, Russia is losing between 25,000 to 30,000 troops per month. Russia has for the first time released footage showing the carriage and launch of the guided, winged version of its huge FAB-3000 aerial bomb. The weapon is among the more recently announced additions to the growing family of UMPK (Universal planning and correction module) munitions in Russia’s arsenal.
The UMPK adds a pop-out wing kit and a guidance package to a range of existing freefall weapons. FAB bombs upgraded with UMPK have wings that flip out as the weapon is released by the aircraft and a satellite navigation system.
The Russian defence ministry emphasised that the FAB-3000 possesses a “combat power that cannot be ignored.” The FAB-3000 is an older Soviet-era bomb that has been modernized with new guidance systems, allowing for precision strikes.
This upgrade has provided Russia with a significant tactical advantage, enabling aircraft to deploy these bombs from greater distances.

Russian forces say they have taken two more Ukrainian villages in the east of the country.

Moscow's foreign ministry announced the capture of one village in the Kharkiv region and another one in Donetsk.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has urged Western leaders to pressure Russia into peace using "all means" necessary.

Mr Zelensky has long said he will not negotiate with Russia directly until Moscow's forces leave all Ukrainian territory, including Crimea.

His call, however, comes as Russia makes gains against Ukraine, with Kyiv suffering from a shortage of Western-supplied weapons.

Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orban has met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow, in a visit that has been heavily criticised by EU leaders and Ukraine's government.

Friday's meeting was part of what Mr Orban called a "peace mission", coming three days after a visit to Kyiv where he met Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Hungary has recently taken over the presidency of the Council of the European Union, but EU leaders have stressed that Mr Orban is not acting on behalf of the bloc.

Mr Orban is the EU's only head of government to have kept close ties to the Kremlin following its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

A state of emergency has been declared in parts of Russia’s Voronezh region after a reported Ukrainian drone strike on an ammunition storage facility.

Alexander Gusev, the governor of Voronezh, said that the attack sparked a large warehouse fire and that the “detonation of explosive material continues”.

“There were no casualties,” Mr Gusev added in a post on his Telegram channel.

According to open-source intelligence analysts, the ammunition dump is located in the small village of Seergevka, which is south east of the city of Voronezh and around 50 miles from the Ukrainian border.

Footage posted on social media showed a drone flying low over the countryside and a large mushroom cloud burning on the horizon.

Ukraine has yet to comment on the attack.

Russia cannot win the war with Ukraine - but Kyiv will only prevail when Nato lets it, according to a former Squadron Leader with the US Navy's elite Seal Team Six.

Chuck Pfarrer, who later became an author and screenwriter, penning a number of Hollywood films including the 1996 Pamela Anderson movie Barb Wire, now spends much of his time analysing the war in Ukraine.

He told Forces News he was "absolutely confident that this war is unwinnable for Russia".

Russian Defense Ministry showed a video of a Su-34 striking Ukraine with a three-ton FAB-3000 bomb. In response, the Presidential Administration called on the West to allow enemy aircraft to be destroyed on Russian territory.

The head of the Presidential Administration of Ukraine Andriy Yermak noted that the Russian militants are launching these attacks from Su-34 aircraft based at airfields, which Ukraine must destroy to protect its people.

Therefore, he emphasized that the country needs permission to strike deep into Russia with Western weapons so that Russian planes no longer drop these bombs.

"One such decision can save many lives," summarized Yermak.

The founder of the charity fund "Close the Sky of Ukraine" Lieutenant General Igor Romanenko told how to combat Russia's use of FAB-3000 bombs against Ukraine.

Das teilte Orban nach seinem Treffen mit Trump vergangene Woche in einem Brief an die EU-Staats- und Regierungschefs mit, der am Dienstag bekannt wurde.

Trump würde mit seinen Bemühungen nicht warten bis zu seiner Amtseinführung als neuer US-Präsident im Januar, sondern sofort nach der Wahl im November damit beginnen, schrieb Orban in dem Brief, der auch an EU-Ratspräsident Charles Michel adressiert ist. "Er (Trump) hat detaillierte und fundierte Pläne dafür", schrieb Orban, der derzeit die rotierende Ratspräsidentschaft der Europäischen Union inne hat.

Der umstrittene ungarische Ministerpräsident hatte kurz nach Übernahme der EU-Ratspräsidentschaft am 1. Juli bereits den russischen Präsidenten Wladimir Putin, Ukraines Staatschef Wolodymyr Selenskyj und auch Chinas Präsident Xi Jinping getroffen. Mit seinem Besuch bei Putin und Xi sorgte Orban in der EU für Empörung. Die EU betonte, dass Orban dafür kein Mandat des Staatenbundes hatte. Die EU-Kommission zog aus den Alleingängen Konsequenzen und will informellen Treffen der ungarischen EU-Ratspräsidentschaft boykottieren und keine Kommissare dazu entsenden.

A video footage has emerged of Russian guards attempting to shoot with rifle Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles, UAVs, at an oil base in Russia. The footage circulated on a Ukrainian Telegram channel shows guards desperately attempting to down drones that were launching attacks on oil bases. However, the guards did not succeed. The incident comes amid intensified Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian territory targeting oil refineries and terminals in an attempt to weaken Russia’s war machine. In the latest of such attacks, Ukrainian drones attacked an oil depot in the Tsimlyansky district in Russia’s southeastern Rostov region in the early hours of Saturday. The oil depot caught fire as a result of the attack that was the latest long-range Ukrainian strike on Russia’s Rostov region. Since the start of the year, Ukrainian drones have attacked over fifteen Russian refineries and several oil depots, which has also involved attacks on major steel plants. Ukraine argues it is targeting Russia’s energy sector because Western sanctions have had only limited impact on Russian economy.

Russian governors have publicly acknowledged that regions cannot rely on Russian air defense but must counteract Ukrainian drones themselves.

Ukrainian drone attacks deep inside Russia continue to put pressure on Russia's air defenses and force Russian military commanders to prioritize the allocation of limited air defense assets to cover what they consider to be important targets, the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) reports.

Satellite images from May 6 show at least seven Pantsir-1 medium-range air defense missile systems protecting Russian leader Vladimir Putin's residence in Valdai.

Ruslan Pukhov, head of the Moscow-based Center for Analysis of Strategies and Technologies and a member of the civilian advisory council to the Russian Defense Ministry, said on July 16 that such “focal” air defense coverage does not make sense on a large scale, since it allows Ukrainian drones to bypass Russian air defense coverage and strike from unprotected directions.

Analysts note that the Russians clearly lack the air defense systems to protect all critical facilities in the west of the country. Pukhov called on the Russian military to implement an innovative decentralized approach to protecting facilities in Russia from Ukrainian drones and warned that Ukrainian drones will likely penetrate deep into Russia.

Amid problems with air defense, the occupiers began to form mobile fire groups, which Ukraine successfully deployed to protect against strikes from Russian Shahed-136/131 drones. However, the Russian Federation has not yet deployed these groups on the scale necessary to sufficiently protect critical facilities in the West.

PUTINS KRIEG: Russlands "Militärwalze" macht extremen Druck! Heftiger Brennpunkt an Front in Ukraine

Die schweren Kämpfe im Osten der Ukraine halten nach Angaben der Militärführung in Kiew weiter an. Die Ukraine verteidigt sich seit mehr als zwei Jahren gegen den russischen Angriffskrieg.

Der Frontabschnitt bei Pokrowsk gilt als vergleichsweise gefährdet. Nachdem die russischen Truppen zu Jahresbeginn die Festung Awdijiwka einnehmen konnten, rücken sie seit Monaten langsam weiter vor. Der Ukraine ist es bislang nicht gelungen, den Vormarsch endgültig zu stoppen und die Verteidigungslinien zu stabilisieren.

Die Ukraine will den russischen Einfluss im westlichen Teil des Schwarzen Meeres zurückdrängen. Sein Land werde dazu eine neue nationale Seestrategie erarbeiten, kündigte der ukrainische Präsident Wolodymyr Selenskyj in seiner täglichen Videoansprache an. «Wir verstehen klar, dass der Krieg das Kräfteverhältnis in unserer Schwarzmeerregion verändert hat und die russische Flotte in diesem Gewässer niemals mehr dominieren wird», gab sich Selenskyj optimistisch. Die Ukraine werde ihre eigenen nationalen Interessen auf See und die ihrer Partner verfolgen und Verkehrsrouten schützen, sagte er.

Russland hatte bereits bei der Annexion der Krim 2014 einen Großteil der ukrainischen Flotte in Besitz genommen. Weitere Schiffe gingen für Kiew kurz nach Beginn der großangelegten russischen Invasion 2022 mit der Eroberung der Hafenstadt Berdjansk im südukrainischen Gebiet Saporischschja verloren. In Mykolajiw ging das Flaggschiff der ukrainischen Marine, die Hetman Sahaidatschnyj unter.

Die Nominierung des US-Republikaners J.D. Vance als Vize eines möglichen US-Präsidenten Donald Trump ist in Deutschland auf Besorgnis gestoßen. Vance habe auf der Münchner Sicherheitskonferenz (MSC) im Februar "sehr klargemacht, wie schnell Trump und er die Ukraine Putin ausliefern würden", schrieb Grünen-Co-Chefin Ricarda Lang am Dienstag auf der Online-Plattform X. "Seine Auswahl als running mate ist besorgniserregend für Europa." MSC-Chef Christoph Heusgen begrüßte dagegen, dass sich Der 39-jährige Senator aus Ohio damals als einer der wenigen Politiker aus dem Trump-Lager den Diskussionen gestellt habe. "Dabei hat er die Zuhörer nicht im Unklaren gelassen über seine Position: Die USA würden künftig andere Prioritäten setzen, Europa müsse sich selbst um seine Verteidigung kümmern und auch die Hauptlast bei der Unterstützung der Ukraine von den USA übernehmen", sagte Heusgen der Nachrichtenagentur Reuters.

"Zur Ukraine vertritt er noch radikalere Positionen als Trump, und er will die militärische Unterstützung einstellen. In der Außenpolitik ist er isolationistischer als Trump", sagte der außenpolitische Sprecher der SPD, Nils Schmid, zu Reuters. Er warnte, dass Vance "persönliche Loyalität zu Trump über die Verfassung stellen" könnte. "Diese Entscheidung fügt sich nahtlos ein in das Vorhaben Trumps, in einer zweiten Amtszeit möglichst schrankenlos Macht ausüben zu können, um politische Gegner zu bekämpfen."

Der stellvertretende CDU/CSU-Fraktionschef Johann Wadephul lobte dagegen wie Heusgen die Diskussionsbereitschaft von Vance mit US-Verbündeten. "Dies eröffnet die Möglichkeit zum Gespräch, das wir unbedingt nutzen sollten", sagte Wadephul zu Reuters. Vance fordere eine größere Verteidigungsverantwortung der Europäer, was nicht überraschend und sogar richtig sei. "Es zeigt sich als Riesenfehler, dass die Bundesregierung mit dem voraussichtlich am Mittwoch beschlossenen Haushaltsentwurf diesen Weg genau nicht beschreitet, sondern sich von der Möglichkeit zur größeren Übernahme von Verantwortung wieder weiter entfernt", kritisierte der CDU-Politiker.

1) These are real people with real lives and real families who love them. Don’t let the numbers sap your humanity.
2) These numbers probably aren’t accurate but they’re the best we have and we don’t need them to be accurate to be indicative of patterns of activity.
3) All losses are estimates. Losses cannot be counted with accuracy because of the conditions on the ground.
4) Both sides would see it to be of their advantage to minimize their own losses maximize the other side’s losses.
5) Neither side releases their losses but we have enough transparency from the Ukrainian side to have confidence in they are indicative.
6) Personnel losses are hard to count. If a soldier gets injured, heals up, and returns to the front line only to get injured again, is that one loss or two? Also, how to deal with losses from PMC’s or soldiers fighting with RF from occupied territories?
7) Equipment losses are hard to count. If an AA complex involves several parts and one part gets disabled, is that a loss, or a fraction of a loss? If a tank gets disabled, repaired, back into the fight, then disabled again, is that one lost tank or two?
8) All recorded losses are vulnerable to multiple reporting. We have already seen numerous cases of multiple drones in the air reporting the same loss from different angles as multiple engagements.
9) Losses are not always reported on the same day they occurred. It is frequent that drone losses are reported at least 24 hours after other terrestrial equipment losses. Certain losses may not be reported for days or weeks for military intelligence reasons.
