Benjamin Netanyahu has warned Israelis "significant challenges" lie ahead following the killing of Hezbollah's leader.

Israel's PM was making his first public comments after a massive Israeli strike on Friday killed Hassan Nasrallah.

He said there was "no place in Iran or the Middle East that the long arm of Israel will not reach", adding that the death of Nasrallah was needed to achieve Israel's war aims of returning thousands of Israelis to the north of the country.

And he claimed the assassination would increase the chances of getting the hostages out of Gaza, once "Sinwar sees that Hezbollah will no longer come to his rescue".

Hezbollah has confirmed the death of its leader, Hassan Nasrallah, after a series of massive Israeli airstrikes on Lebanon’s capital Beirut. Nasrallah, who had not been seen in public for years because of fears of being assassinated by Israel, was one of the most influential figures in the Middle East.

Ali Karki, the commander of Hezbollah’s southern front, and other Hezbollah military leaders were also killed in the attack on Beirut’s southern suburb of Dahiyeh, according to the Israeli military.

Hezbollah confirmed Nasrallah’s death and vowed to keep up the fight against Israel “in support of Gaza and Palestine, and in defence of Lebanon”. Iran, the main backer of Hezbollah, declared five days of national mourning. Iran’s Supreme Leader declared that Nasrallah’s death "will not go unavenged"

Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said his country had “settled the score” with Nasrallah’s death and described his assassination as an “historic turning point” which could reshape the region.

US President Joe Biden said that his death was a "measure of justice for his many victims” and Kamala Harris described Nasrallah as a “terrorist” with blood on his hands.

Western countries are warning citizens to leave Lebanon as the assassination fuels fears of a wider war. Israel has strongly signalled that it may send ground forces into Lebanon. Thousands of Lebanese citizens are continue to flee the south of the country.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday vowed to carry out “full force” strikes against Hezbollah until it ceases firing rockets across the border, dimming hopes for a cease-fire proposal put forth by U.S. and European officials.

Israel carried out a new strike in the Lebanese capital, which it said killed a senior Hezbollah commander, and the militant group launched dozens of rockets into Israel. Tens of thousands of Israeli and Lebanese people living near their countries’ border have been displaced by the fighting.

Netanyahu spoke as he landed in New York to attend the annual United Nations (UN) General Assembly meeting, where U.S. and European officials were putting heavy pressure on both sides of the conflict to accept a proposed 21-day halt in the fighting to give time for diplomacy and avert all-out war.

The IDF intercepted a missile fired by the Houthi rebels in Yemen, the military said late on Thursday after sirens were heard in many communities surrounding the Tel Aviv metropolitan area, the central plains, and the city of Modi'in.

Earlier Hezbollah said its senior commander of the terror group's aerial forces Mohammed Srur who was killed in a targeted strike on a 10-story building in Beirut's Dahieh, had recently returned to Lebanon from Yemen where he had been training the Houthi rebels.

Hezbollah has confirmed the death of its leader Hassan Nasrallah after Israeli strikes on Beirut.

Nasrallah, who had not been seen in public for years because of fears of being assassinated by Israel, was one of the best-known and most influential figures in the Middle East.

Air strikes are continuing in southern Beirut, with a BBC correspondent seeing thick smoke rising over several locations in Dahieh on Saturday morning.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) says Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah has been killed.

A statement shared on the IDF's X account says: "Hassan Nasrallah will no longer be able to terrorize the world."

Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of Lebanon's militant Shia Islamist Hezbollah movement, is one of the best known and most influential figures in the Middle East.

Nasrallah has not been seen in public for years because of fears of being assassinated by Israel.

The statement follows a series of overnight strikes in Beirut which Israel said were targeting Nasrallah and other Hezbollah commanders.

Lebanon's health ministry says at least 182 people have been killed and hundreds more wounded in Israel strikes today.

The UN has said the Middle East is on the "brink of imminent catastrophe" as tensions rise in the region, with the US also calling on Israel to avoid fighting with Hezbollah.

Israel says strikes against Hezbollah are "deepening" as citizens in southern Lebanon have received phone messages warning them to leave places used by the Iran-backed group.

A Lebanese minister calls the messages "psychological war" while Israel's defence minister says strikes will continue "until we achieve our goals - to return the residents of the north safely to their homes".

Donald Trump has pledged that the United States would “take other countries’ jobs” if he returned to the White House as president.

At a campaign rally in Savannah, Georgia, Trump promised a "manufacturing renaissance", reiterating his pledge to punish American companies that manufactured outside the US, and slap large tariffs on foreign-made goods to protect US industries.

“Under my plan, American workers will no longer be worried about losing your jobs to foreign nations. Instead, foreign nations will be worried about losing their jobs to America,” Trump said.

Vice-President Kamala Harris is expected to unveil a new set of economic proposals in a major speech in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on Wednesday.

Left-leaning politician Anura Kumara Dissanayake has won Sri Lanka’s presidential election after a historic second round of counting.

He heads the National People’s Power alliance, which includes Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna, or People's Liberation Front - a party that has traditionally backed strong state intervention and lower taxes, and campaigned for leftist economic policies.

The election on Saturday was the first to be held since mass protests unseated the country's leader, Gotabaya Rajapaksa, in 2022 after Sri Lanka suffered its worst economic crisis.

UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy has announced that the UK is suspending approximately 30 export licences for military equipment, following its review of Israel’s compliance with international humanitarian law in the course of its military operations in Gaza.

The 30 licences (out of a total of around 350) include components for military aircraft, helicopters, drones and items which facilitate ground targeting. Officials say the government has concluded there is a clear risk that items exported to Israel might be used in serious violations of international humanitarian law.

Officials emphasise that this is not an arms embargo and that the government’s assessment is not designed to prejudge the outcomes of work by international courts, such as the ICJ and ICC.

Hundreds of members of the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah have reportedly been injured after handheld pagers they use to communicate exploded.

Lebanon’s state news agency said there were blasts in the southern suburbs of Beirut and several other areas. Hezbollah's al-Manar TV also said many pagers had exploded, without identifying those hurt.

Videos and photos on social media appeared to show wounded men sitting or lying on floors and others being rushed to hospitals. Unconfirmed CCTV footage showed blasts in shops.

A Hezbollah official told Reuters news agency it constituted the "biggest security breach yet" since hostilities with Israel escalated 11 months ago in parallel with the Gaza war.

There was no immediate comment from the Israeli military, though the events come hours after Israel’s security cabinet made the safe return of 60,000 residents displaced in the north by Hezbollah attacks an official war goal.
