Donald Trump was shot in the right ear during a rally at Butler, Pennsylvania on Saturday, July 13. One rally attendee was killed and two other spectators were injured. US Secret Service said it "quickly neutralised the shooter, who is now deceased".
Eyewitness Charles Reety said: "I heard the shots and then all of a sudden, somebody hollers, ‘get down on the ground’ and everybody's and everybody's going down on the ground as low as they can get."

DONALD TRUMP: Neues Sniper-Video aufgetaucht! Dieser Scharfschütze stoppte den Attentäter Crooks!

Der mutmaßliche Schütze bei einer Wahlkampfveranstaltung von US-Präsidentschaftskandidat Donald Trump war nach Angaben des FBI ein 20-Jähriger aus dem Bundesstaat Pennsylvania. Die US-Bundespolizei gab seinen Namen am Sonntag mit Thomas Matthew Crooks an. Im Wählerverzeichnis war er als Mitglied der oppositionellen Republikaner eingetragen - der Partei von Trump. Das Motiv für das mutmaßliche Attentat ist laut FBI bislang noch unklar. Trump wurde am Ohr verletzt. Der Schütze ist laut FBI tot.

Nach Angaben der Ermittler stammt Crooks aus Bethel Park, einer Stadt rund 70 Kilometer südlich von Butler, wo die Wahlkampfveranstaltung stattfand. Wie aus Unterlagen der Wahlkommission hervorgeht, spendete er im Alter von 17 Jahren 15 Dollar an die politische Gruppierung ActBlue. Die Organisation sammelt Geld für linksgerichtete Politiker und Vertreter der Demokratischen Partei von Präsident Joe Biden. Die Spende war für das "Progressive Turnout Project" bestimmt, mit der zur Wahl demokratischer Politiker mobilisiert werden sollte. Die Gruppen antworteten zunächst nicht auf Reuters-Anfragen. Crooks hätte am 5. November erstmals bei einer Präsidentenwahl seine Stimme abgeben können.

Crooks machte 2022 seinen Abschluss an der Bethel Park High School, wie die Zeitung "Pittsburgh Tribune-Review" berichtete. Demnach erhielt er auch einen mit 500 Dollar dotierten Preis für mathematisch-technische Leistungen von der National Math and Science Initiative. Der Vater des mutmaßlichen Attentäters, Matthew Crooks, sagte im Sender CNN, er versuche herauszufinden, was passiert sei. Er wolle erst über seinen Sohn reden, nachdem er mit Ermittlern gesprochen habe. Reuters konnte zunächst keine Konten in sozialen Medien oder Online-Postings von Crooks identifizieren. Meta, die Muttergesellschaft von Facebook und Instagram, antwortete vorerst nicht auf Fragen, ob von Crooks veröffentlichte Botschaften oder Stellungnahmen wegen deren Inhalten gelöscht worden seien.

Im Heimatort von Crooks liefen die Ermittlungen wenige Stunden nach den Schüssen auf Hochtouren. Dutzende von Polizeifahrzeugen seien vor dem Haus, das im Wählerverzeichnis als Crooks Wohnort angegeben ist, berichtete das Blatt "USA Today". Auch Spezialisten zur Entschärfung von Sprengsätzen seien im Einsatz. Die Umgebung des Wohnsitzes sei mit einem gelbem Polizeiband abgesperrt worden. Die Flugaufsicht FAA sperrte den Luftraum über Bethel Park aus "besonderen Sicherheitsgründen".
