Kenya’s President William Ruto says he will withdraw a finance bill containing controversial tax hikes after deadly protests which saw parliament set ablaze on Tuesday.

In an address to the nation, he said it was clear that Kenyans "want nothing" to do with the bill.

"I concede," he said, adding that he will not sign the bill into law.

At least 22 people were killed in Tuesday’s protests, according to the state-funded Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNHRC).

Russian President Vladimir Putin has praised North Korea for "firmly supporting" Moscow's war in Ukraine, ahead of his first visit to Pyongyang in 24 years.

Mr Putin is expected to arrive in the capital to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on Tuesday.

The two leaders last met in September at the Vostochny cosmodrome in Russia's far east, but this is Mr Putin’s first visit to Pyongyang since 2000.

The United States said it was concerned about the "deepening relationship between these two countries".

Hundreds of people are thought to have died during the Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia - most of them due to extreme heat as temperatures soared past 51 degrees Celsius.

AFP news agency quoted an Arab diplomat as saying 658 Egyptians had died. Indonesia said that more than 200 of its nationals had died. India said 98 people were known to have died.

Pakistan, Malaysia, Jordan, Iran, Senegal, Tunisia, Sudan and Iraq's autonomous Kurdistan region have also confirmed deaths. The US believes a number of Americans died, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Hajj is the annual pilgrimage made by Muslims to the holy city of Mecca.

All Muslims who are financially and physically able must complete the pilgrimage at least once in their lifetime.

About 1.8 million people have taken part this year, Saudi Arabia says.

The White House has pushed back on questions about US President Joe Biden’s mental fitness.

Questions about the 81-year-old’s mental sharpness have intensified since a poor debate performance against Donald Trump last month.

Mr Biden took the highly unusual step of phoning in to a morning TV show, saying: "I am not going anywhere."

He dared doubters in the party to either challenge him or unite behind his candidacy.

US President Biden has addressed the nation after what the FBI are treating as an assassination attempt on Donald Trump.

Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris were briefed in the situation room by the Homeland Security team and the FBI director.

The president said the FBI is leading the investigation, which is in its early stages.

He said there is still no information about the motive of the shooter.

"I urge everyone, please, don't make assumptions about his motives or his affiliations," Biden said.

"Let the FBI do their job and their partner agencies do their job."

"I've instructed that this investigation be thorough and swift and the investigators will have every resource they need to get this done," he added.

Paris's mayor Anne Hidalgo has swam in the River Seine in a bid to show the water is clean enough for Olympic events.

Three Olympic and Paralympic events are set to be held in the Seine, including the triathlon, marathon swimming and Para-triathlon - though concerns were raised previously about the safety of the water.

Swimming in the Seine has been banned for a century because of the filthy water, caused by upstream industrial sewage and sanitation demands.

City swimming is set to be one of the major legacies of this summer's Olympic Games in France, with three open-air swimming areas set to be accessible from the quayside by 2025.

Jay Slater's family said their "hearts are broken" after his body was identified in Tenerife.

Almost a month since the 19-year-old was last seen, a Spanish court confirmed that he had been identified through fingerprint tests and his injuries were "consistent with a fall in a rocky area".

The teenager, from Oswaldtwistle in Lancashire, had been missing since 17 June, after visiting an Airbnb rented by two people he had been with at the NRG music festival on the island.

His mother, Debbie Duncan, said "our hearts are broken" following the confirmation, which came after a 29-day search by police, family, friends and volunteers in difficult terrain across a mountainous area of the island.

Cyanide has been found in the blood of all six people who died in a luxury hotel suite in Bangkok, say doctors after examining their bodies.

Based on the initial post-mortem examination, they say there is "no other cause" that would explain their deaths "except for cyanide".

But further tests are being carried out to determine the "intensity" of the deadly chemical and to rule out any other toxins.

The Spanish economy has been growing faster than most of its European neighbours recently - and that's in great part due to its tourism industry.

Tourism contributes around 13% of GDP growth to the country's economy thanks to a model based on sand, sea and sun.

This year, nearly 100 million foreign visitors are expected - a new record - and not everyone is happy about the influx of tourists.

Anti-tourism protests have been taking place across many parts of the count§y, including popular destinations Barcelona and Malaga.

The attempted assassination of Donald Trump at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania exposed a series of security lapses that allowed the gunman to mount his assassination attempt.

The gunman Thomas Matthew Crooks was able to access a roof around 130 meters from the podium where Mr Trump was speaking.

It’s the job of the US Secret Service to protect sitting and former presidents. Somehow the gunman managed to breach the security perimeter with a rifle and reach an elevated position close to Mr Trump.

Video of the attack and the accounts of eyewitnesses suggest that members of the crowd became aware of the threat before the police and other security officials and attempted to alert them to the danger It was only when the gunman opened fire that officials recognised the danger and responded, with Thomas Crooks shot dead by armed officers.

Four Russian naval vessels - including a nuclear-powered submarine and a frigate - have arrived in Cuba, in what is seen as a show of force amid tensions with the West over the war in Ukraine.

The vessels are anchored at the Havana Bay - some 90 miles (145km) from the US state of Florida.

Russia's defence ministry says the Admiral Gorshkov frigate and the Kazan submarine are both carriers of advanced weapons, including hypersonic missiles Zircon. They earlier conducted missile drills in the Atlantic.

But Cuba's foreign ministry says none of the vessels has nuclear arms on board, and their five-day visit does not pose a threat to the region.

US officials say they are closely monitoring the visit.

Italy's PM Giorgia Meloni has welcomed leaders of the world's seven richest nations at the G7 summit in Italy.

The members - Canada, France Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK and the United States - meet throughout the year to discuss global events, with one set-piece summit a year.

They are expected to discuss a number of issues, including the wars in Ukraine and Gaza.

The group cannot pass laws - but some of their past decisions have had global effects, including backing a deal in 2021 to tax multinational companies.

This year, the summit is expected to agree a plan to use frozen Russian assets to raise billions of dollars for Ukraine.

A defiant President Biden has hit the campaign trail in the swing state of Michigan as he continues to try to save his bid for re-election and take on Donald Trump in November.

It came after another serious blow to his campaign, when he made two more blunders during a press conference at the NATO summit in Washington.

Pressure has been building for Mr Biden to step aside as Democratic candidate for November's election since a stumbling performance in a TV debate last month.

He insists he is fit to run and that the decision rests with voters rather than party leaders in Washington.

The US Supreme Court has said Donald Trump and other former presidents are immune from criminal prosecution for official acts, in a major legal victory for the Republican White House candidate.

The decision makes it less likely that the Republican candidate will stand trial before he challenges Democratic President Joe Biden in November's White House election.

It is the first time since the nation's founding that the Supreme Court has declared former presidents can be shielded from criminal charges.

The justices found that a president is not immune for "unofficial acts”. The 6-3 ruling did not dismiss outright an indictment that charges Trump with plotting to overturn the 2020 election, but it did strip away key elements of the case against him.

The three liberal justices on the Supreme Court dissented strongly from the ruling, expressing “fear for our democracy”. “The President is now a king above the law,” wrote Justice Sonia Sotomayor.

Six people have been found dead in a luxury hotel suite in Thailand's capital, Bangkok.

Confusion and mystery have surrounded the grim discovery, with local media initially suggesting there had been a shooting at the five-star Grand Hyatt Erawan Bangkok, but police later dismissed these reports and said there was no evidence of gunfire.

Instead, authorities are investigating whether the victims died of poisoning.

The deceased - three men and three women - were all Vietnamese nationals, and some had dual American citizenship, Thailand's prime minister said.
