The Ukrainian Defense Forces may soon have an effective new type of weapon against Russian long-range guided aerial bombs, Ukranian volunteer Serhiy Prytula announced. Analysts from the military portal Defense Express assessed how possible this is.
"There is one specific technical solution that was thought up here in Ukraine. This new type of weapon is currently being tested, and if it is successful, it will be put into production," said Prytula.
Glide bombs are cheap. Russia is firing hundreds a week at Ukrainian targets at and behind the front lines. These bombs are small and difficult to spot on radar. They do not use propulsion or emit a detectable heat signature. Russian aircraft launch glide bombs dozens of miles behind the front lines, in relative sanctuary.
Analysts emphasized that there are currently only a few methods of possible counteraction to Russian glide bombs.
"The first is their destruction, for which, of course, an SAM system can be used, but it is impossible to call it effective. Moreover, the appearance of a Ukrainian anti-aircraft missile system would obviously have been announced somewhat differently. If not an SAM system, then the next candidate for the destruction of guided aerial bombs could be automated anti-aircraft installations such as the ship-based Phalanx CIWS or its land-based version Centurion C-RAM, which, by the way, Ukraine has repeatedly requested. But, as in the case of an SAM system, this is a full-fledged development that takes years and costs hundreds of millions of dollars, as the experience of Korea directly demonstrates," the report says.
There are also alternative methods of disposal, the portal added:
"Combat lasers or directed microwave radiation. But all this, even in Western countries with gigantic budgets, did not reach the prototype stage, as the British Dragon Fire is an excellent example."
In addition, as analysts noted, UABs can also be countered by jamming their satellite navigation, but it is difficult to call this a final solution.
"Therefore, it is entirely possible that we are talking about other methods of counteraction, the principle of which is not on the surface," the analysts concluded.
Recall that earlier it was reported that Russian troops began using a new munition for strikes on Ukraine, which could change the situation on the ground. We are talking about the FAB-3000 M-54.

After six months of setbacks, failed counter-offensives and heavy losses, the Ukrainian armed forces are suffering "death by a thousand cuts", according to a former general.

Despite inflicting punishing losses on Russia, which is currently losing up to 1,200 soldiers per day, Ukraine is being strained by relentless Russian attacks in an attempt to wear down the country.

Retired Australian Army Major General Mick Ryan said: "It really is this death by a thousand cuts."

The United States will begin stationing long-range missiles in Germany from 2026. Washington and Berlin say the deployment cements their commitment to NATO and European defense. The agreement includes Tomahawk, SM-6, and hypersonic missiles.

Unlike other types of weapons, thermite must be very close to the target. That's why the US Army's AN-M14 thermite grenades are classified as demolition weapons rather than weapons, and are used to "damage, disable, or destroy vehicles, weapons systems, shelters, or munitions." A small drone is ideal for delivering these grenades to a target.

The combination of drones and thermite is a powerful one, as the precise delivery of the drone can direct thermite to exactly where it will have the greatest effect. And even a small amount of green stuff can cause a big fire.

Thermite is not as effective against armor as shaped charge warheads, not as useful for antipersonnel use as fragmentation warheads, and does not have the explosive power of thermobaric designs. But it is very useful for precision attacks against flammable targets.

As Ukraine ramps up drone attacks on Russian oil and gas storage facilities and power substations, thermite is likely to be used more frequently. The metal cages the Russians have begun installing around infrastructure are unlikely to stop the Ukrainians.

Russian governors have publicly acknowledged that regions cannot rely on Russian air defense but must counteract Ukrainian drones themselves.

Ukrainian drone attacks deep inside Russia continue to put pressure on Russia's air defenses and force Russian military commanders to prioritize the allocation of limited air defense assets to cover what they consider to be important targets, the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) reports.

Satellite images from May 6 show at least seven Pantsir-1 medium-range air defense missile systems protecting Russian leader Vladimir Putin's residence in Valdai.

Ruslan Pukhov, head of the Moscow-based Center for Analysis of Strategies and Technologies and a member of the civilian advisory council to the Russian Defense Ministry, said on July 16 that such “focal” air defense coverage does not make sense on a large scale, since it allows Ukrainian drones to bypass Russian air defense coverage and strike from unprotected directions.

Analysts note that the Russians clearly lack the air defense systems to protect all critical facilities in the west of the country. Pukhov called on the Russian military to implement an innovative decentralized approach to protecting facilities in Russia from Ukrainian drones and warned that Ukrainian drones will likely penetrate deep into Russia.

Amid problems with air defense, the occupiers began to form mobile fire groups, which Ukraine successfully deployed to protect against strikes from Russian Shahed-136/131 drones. However, the Russian Federation has not yet deployed these groups on the scale necessary to sufficiently protect critical facilities in the West.
