The attempted assassination of Donald Trump at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania exposed a series of security lapses that allowed the gunman to mount his assassination attempt.
The gunman Thomas Matthew Crooks was able to access a roof around 130 meters from the podium where Mr Trump was speaking.
It’s the job of the US Secret Service to protect sitting and former presidents. Somehow the gunman managed to breach the security perimeter with a rifle and reach an elevated position close to Mr Trump.
Video of the attack and the accounts of eyewitnesses suggest that members of the crowd became aware of the threat before the police and other security officials and attempted to alert them to the danger It was only when the gunman opened fire that officials recognised the danger and responded, with Thomas Crooks shot dead by armed officers.

Thousands of NHS cancer patients in England are expected to get access to trials of a new type of treatment using vaccines to fight their disease.
Thirty hospitals so far have signed up to the Cancer Vaccine Launch Pad.
It is designed to match patients with forthcoming trials using mRNA technology, as found in current Covid jabs.
The vaccines are designed to prime the immune system to recognise and destroy any remaining cancer cells and reduce the risk of the disease recurring.

An unpopular mobilization law to replenish Ukraine's troop numbers is working better than expected, according to the military. The army says if the number of new recruits continues to rise, it may be in a position to draft a demobilization law later this year. That would allow war-weary troops on the frontlines some much needed rest.

What can you say about this man who gave us so much in the world of rock n roll... it's hard to summarise but he was a beautiful, great, influential guitarist who blessed us with his talent and flair with so many unforgettable and legendary performances. Chuck Berry (!) once described Hilton Valentine as "a wildly exciting instrumentalist", absolutely yes! there was so much more to Hilton than House of the Rising Sun, please check out Hilton's stormin' performances on album tracks and live performances and you would soon hear why Chuck Berry would acknowledge Hilton in this way. This week two key figures in US politics are generating headlines, in no small way, because of their age. Yesterday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced her plans to step down as leader of the Democrats in the House. At 82, Pelosi said the hour has come for a new generation to lead. However, she will keep her seat and Congress with no plans to retire.
On Tuesday former President Donald Trump made it official, announcing he is again running to be President of the United States. Trump is 76. He would be 78 if the voters gave him another chance to move into the White House. Trump will be spending the next year or two on the campaign trail - no retirement for him, either.
What about the man in the White House now? Joe Biden has a birthday coming up. On Sunday, the president will turn 80. Some consider Biden too old for the job.
