President Joe Biden dropped out of the 2024 presidential race on Sunday. This comes as Democrats called for Biden to withdraw.

He suspended his re-election campaign amid mounting pressure from his Democratic colleagues on Capitol Hill. Biden was diagnosed with COVID-19 on Wednesday.

President Biden endorsed Kamala Harris stating, "My very first decision as the party nominee in 2020 was to pick Kamala Harris as my Vice President. Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year."

Former President Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social, "Crooked Joe Biden was not fit to run for President, and is certainly not fit to serve - And never was! He only attained the position of President by lies, Fake News, and not leaving his Basement. All those around him, including his Doctor and the Media, knew that he wasn’t capable of being President, and he wasn’t - And now, look what he’s done to our Country, with millions of people coming across our Border, totally unchecked and unvetted, many from prisons, mental institutions, and record numbers of terrorists. We will suffer greatly because of his presidency, but we will remedy the damage he has done very quickly. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!"

US President Joe Biden has ended his reelection campaign after fellow Democrats lost faith in his mental acuity and ability to beat Donald Trump, leaving the presidential race in uncharted territory.
The announcement on Sunday by the oldest sitting president in the United States’ history came amid mounting pressure from his fellow Democrats, with more than 30 Congress members publicly pushing for his exit.
Joe Biden has endorsed his vice president Kamala Harris. She previously served as a senator and as California's attorney general. She’s outspoken on abortion rights and, as the first black vice president has shored up support among African Americans. However, her approval ratings are low.

USA: Paukenschlag! Demokrat Joe Biden zieht sich aus dem US-Präsidentschaftsrennen zurück

US-Präsident Joe Biden will bei der Wahl im November nicht länger für eine zweite Amtszeit antreten. Der Demokrat verkündete über die sozialen Medien Instagram, Facebook und X seinen Rückzug aus dem Präsidentschaftsrennen. In den vergangenen Wochen war der 81-Jährige wegen seines Alters und seines mentalen Zustandes in der eigenen Partei massiv unter Druck geraten. Bidens Rückzug so kurz vor der Wahl ist eine dramatische Wende und verursacht weiteres Chaos in einem ohnehin historischen US-Wahljahr.

«Obwohl es meine Absicht war, mich um eine Wiederwahl zu bemühen, glaube ich, dass es im besten Interesse meiner Partei und des Landes ist, wenn ich mich zurückziehe und mich für den Rest meiner Amtszeit ausschließlich auf die Erfüllung meiner Pflichten als Präsident konzentriere», schrieb der Demokrat in einer schriftlichen Erklärung. «Ich werde im Laufe dieser Woche vor der Nation ausführlicher über meine Entscheidung sprechen.» 


Die Krise der vergangenen Wochen

Biden war nach einem desaströsen Auftritt bei einem Fernsehduell gegen Ex-Präsident Trump Ende Juni extrem in die Kritik geraten. Während des Schlagabtauschs verhaspelte sich der mächtigste Mann der Welt regelmäßig, verlor den Faden, starrte mit offenem Mund ins Leere und konnte häufig seine Sätze nicht richtig beenden. Schon vorher hatte es innerhalb der Demokratischen Partei und in der Bevölkerung wegen Bidens Alter Vorbehalte gegen seine Wiederwahlambitionen gegeben. Doch nach dem Duell entflammte die Debatte über die Eignung des Bidens als Präsidentschaftskandidat der Demokraten in ganz neuem Ausmaß - und in aller Öffentlichkeit. 

Nach der Debatte hatten sich Bidens Umfragewerte noch mal deutlich verschlechtert. Und in seiner eigenen Partei wagten sich einer nach dem anderen vor, um öffentlich Bidens Rückzug aus dem Rennen um die Präsidentschaft zu fordern. Der Präsident selbst versuchte zunächst, sich herauszureden. Seinen schwachen Auftritt begründete er mit Müdigkeit in Folge anstrengender Auslandsreisen. Er habe nicht aus seine Berater gehört und sich übernommen. Bei diversen Auftritten gab er sich trotzig und versicherte ein ums andere Mal, er werde sich nicht zurückziehen. Doch es folgten weitere Patzer. Und am Ende wurde der Druck aus den eigenen Reihen zu groß.

In den vergangenen Tagen hatte sich Biden nach einer Infektion mit dem Coronavirus in sein Privathaus in Rehoboth Delaware zurückgezogen und keine öffentlichen Termine absolviert. Während seiner Zwangspause fasste er nun den Entschluss, sich dem Druck seiner Parteikollegen zu beugen.


Demokraten vor Mammut-Aufgabe

Die Demokraten müssen nun in kürzester Zeit umsatteln und die Nachfolge regeln. Biden schlug nach seiner Rückzugs-Ankündigung seine Stellvertreterin Kamala Harris vor, die in den vergangenen Wochen mehr und mehr in den Fokus gerückt war. Die 59-Jährige war in ihrem Vizepräsidentenamt an der Seite Bidens bislang blass geblieben, bekam angesichts von dessen Schwäche zuletzt allerdings die Unterstützung einer ganzen Reihe wichtiger Parteimitglieder. Die Demokraten nominieren ihren Präsidentschaftskandidaten offiziell bei einem Parteitag in Chicago Mitte Augst.

Die Republikaner haben ihren Präsidentschaftskandidaten Donald Trump bei einem Nominierungsparteitag in Milwaukee bereits offiziell gekürt. Biden hatte bis zuletzt immer wieder behauptet, er sei der einzige der Trump schlagen könne. 


Ein Wahljahr wie keines zuvor

Schon vor dieser größtmöglichen Komplikation war dieses US-Wahljahr eines, das auf allen Ebenen heraussticht, vor allem mit Blick auf den republikanischen Kandidaten. Mit Trump bewirbt sich ein verurteilter Straftäter um das höchste Amt im Staat. Als erster Ex-Präsident der Vereinigten Staaten wurde der Republikaner in einem Strafverfahren schuldig gesprochen - wegen der Verschleierung einer Schweigegeldzahlung an eine Pornodarstellerin. Im Wahlkampf hat das dem 78-Jährigen bislang nicht geschadet. Es laufen noch andere Strafverfahren gegen ihn - allerdings dürfte es vor dem Wahltag in diesen Fällen nicht mehr zum Prozess kommen.

Joe Biden has pulled out off 2024 US presidential race.

The US president, 81, confirmed that he will no longer be seeking a second term on Sunday, a move that flips the 2024 presidential race on its head.

An as-yet unknown Democrat will now take the lead as they face-off against Republican nominee Donald Trump and his running mate JD Vance.

It's an unprecedented development, with Mr Biden announcing he would not step down from the race earlier in the week.

It follows widespread speculation surrounding Mr Biden's age and health ahead of a second potential 4 year term in office.

In a statement posted to Twitter, the current US president wrote: "My Fellow Americans, over the past three and a half years, we have made great progress as a Nation."

"Today, America has the strongest economy in the world. We've made historic investments in rebuilding our Nation, in lowering prescription drug costs for seniors, and in expanding affordable health care to a record number of Americans.

"We've provided critically needed care to a million veterans exposed to toxic substances. Passed the first gun safety law in 30 years.

"Appointed the first African American woman to the Supreme Court. And passed the most significant climate legislation in the history of the world. America has never been better positioned to lead than we are today.

"I know none of this could have been done without you, the American people. Together, we overcame a once in a century pandemic and the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. We've protected and preserved our Democracy. And we've revitalized and strengthened our alliances around the world.

"It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President. And while it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term.

"I will speak to the Nation later this week in more detail about my decision.

"For now, let me express my deepest gratitude to all those who have worked so hard to see me reelected. I want to thank Vice President Kamala Harris for being an extraordinary partner in all this work. And let me express my heartfelt appreciation to the American people for the faith and trust you have placed in me.

He added: "I believe today what I always have: that there is nothing America can't do - when we do it together. We just have to remember we are the United States of America."

The Biden campaign on Thursday ripped former President Trump’s convention speech as a rambling attempt to mask his “extreme vision” for a second term, while touting President Biden’s intention to stay in the race.

Biden campaign chair Jen O’Malley Dillon in a statement sought to connect Trump to Project 2025, a controversial policy blueprint from the Heritage Foundation that Trump and his team have aggressively tried to distance themselves from.

“Tonight, Donald Trump rambled on for well over an hour and failed to mention Project 2025 even once,” O’Malley Dillon said in a statement. “He failed to mention how he had inflicted pain and cruelty on the women of America by overturning Roe v Wade. He failed to mention his plan to take over the civil service and to pardon the January 6th insurrectionists.

“He sought to find problems with America, not to provide solutions. But after all, it was Donald Trump who destroyed our economy, ripped away rights, and failed middle-class families,” she continued. “Now he pursues the presidency with an even more extreme vision for where he wants to take this country.”
