Costco (COST) is finally raising its membership fees, a move many on Wall Street had been anticipating. Starting September 1, 2024, Gold Star membership fees will increase by $5 to $65, and Executive Memberships will increase by $10 to $130.

The retailer also announced it posted June net sales of $24.48 billion, an increase of 7.4% from a year ago and declared a quarterly cash dividend of $1.16 per share.

The March retail sales report surprised to the upside, coming in at 0.7% from the month prior versus the anticipated 0.4% gain. Roth MKM's Chief Economist and Macro Strategist Michael Darda joins the Morning Brief to discuss the implications of this report for the Federal Reserve's rate cut plans, calling it a "body blow to expectations."
Darda notes that earlier this year, markets had priced in expectations for six to seven rate cuts. However, that outlook has now dwindled to less than two rate cuts. With "several months of hot inflation readings" combined with the better-than-expected retail sales data, in Darda's view, this leaves the Fed with little choice but "pushing back in terms of when they would likely start to entertain any kind of a notion of easing monetary policy."
Darda believes rate cuts could materialize later in 2024. However, he expects monetary policy to only begin easing once "it's much more obvious that the economy is losing steam." Darda warned of two potential "tail risks": the Fed waiting too long and causing "issues with earnings," or easing too soon and risking "a reacceleration, high inflation risk." He characterizes the Fed's rate cut timing as a "balancing act."

David Lammy has called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza during his first visit to Israel and the Palestinian Territories as foreign secretary.

During talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian Authority PM Mohammad Mustafa on Sunday, the newly appointed minister also urged the release of all hostages held in Gaza and an increase in the flow of aid to the territory.

"I’m here to push for a ceasefire," he said. "The loss of life over the last few months... is horrendous. It has to stop."

It comes after the Hamas-run health ministry said 80 Palestinians were killed in Israeli airstrikes in the last 24 hours.

Israel said its air force targeted a number of what it called terrorists operating in the area.

Vladimir Putin has said Ukraine would need to withdraw troops from territories Russia claims to have annexed before a ceasefire could begin.

Ukraine's President Zelensky has called the terms a Hitler-like "ultimatum".

Ukraine has long said that it will not negotiate with Moscow until Russian forces leave all Ukrainian territory, including Crimea.

Russia's president also said Ukraine would have to give up on joining Nato before peace talks could start.

Labour is set to win a UK general election landslide with a majority of 170, according to an exit poll for the BBC, ITV and Sky.

If the forecast is accurate, it means Sir Keir Starmer will become prime minister with 410 Labour MPs - just short of Tony Blair’s 1997 total.

The Conservatives are predicted to slump to 131 MPs, their lowest number in post-war history.

At the past five UK general elections, the exit poll has been accurate to within a range of 1.5 and 7.5 seats.

President Zelensky has urged NATO leaders to drop all restrictions on striking targets inside Russia if, in his words, means Ukraine wins the war.

It comes after one of the worst Russian attacks on Ukraine this week, when over 40 people were killed and a children’s hospital in Kyiv was hit.

At the Nato’s summit in Washington, members promised billions of pounds more in military aid and training for the country.

But, as our Ukraine Correspondent James Waterhouse explains, the pledges were a fraction of what Kyiv was hoping for.
