Forty-seven heads of state and government are meeting at Mimi Castle, a wine estate southeast of the Moldovan capital, Chisinau, for what promises to be an exciting day for the second poorest country in Europe and one of the most recent to receive EU candidate status.
The second European Political Community (EPC) summit since its founding last year poses one of the largest logistical challenges that Moldova, a small nation wedged between Romania and Ukraine, has ever encountered.
All the political problems that leaders have been wrestling with since 2022 have converged in Moldova, whose government is worried it will be the next target for Moscow's aggression if Russia prevails over Ukraine. One pro-Russian region —Transnistria — already declared its independence from Moldova in 1992, and has been occupied by Russian "peacekeeping" troops ever since. Despite this frozen conflict, the EU has expressed its willingness to admit Moldova into its fold along with Ukraine — one day.

More than 120 people have died and hundreds are still missing after record rainfall caused the worst flooding in parts of Western Europe for many decades.

In Germany dozens of people were unaccounted for, with the Chancellor Angela Merkel describing the floods as a catastrophe.

Torrential rain has also devastated parts of Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg.

Survivors have described the terrifying speed at which water levels rose.

Some politicians in Germany say the extreme weather is the result of global warming and they're calling for more urgent action to counter climate change.

Clive Myrie presents BBC News at Ten reporting - from Jenny Hill in Erftstadt, Germany - Anna Holligan in the Dutch town of Valkenberg - and chief environment correspondent Justin Rowlatt on the threat posed by climate change.

This week two key figures in US politics are generating headlines, in no small way, because of their age. Yesterday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced her plans to step down as leader of the Democrats in the House. At 82, Pelosi said the hour has come for a new generation to lead. However, she will keep her seat and Congress with no plans to retire.
On Tuesday former President Donald Trump made it official, announcing he is again running to be President of the United States. Trump is 76. He would be 78 if the voters gave him another chance to move into the White House. Trump will be spending the next year or two on the campaign trail - no retirement for him, either.
What about the man in the White House now? Joe Biden has a birthday coming up. On Sunday, the president will turn 80. Some consider Biden too old for the job.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A top House Republican, Steve Scalise of Louisiana, was shot and wounded by a rifle-wielding gunman Wednesday at a congressional baseball practice just outside of Washington. Several other people were also wounded, and at least two were in critical condition.

Capitol Police officers who were in Scalise's security detail returned fire and wounded the shooter, who was taken into custody. In all, five people were taken to area hospitals, including the suspect, Alexandria police said.

Scalise, 51, the No. 3 House Republican leader first elected to the House in 2008, was in stable condition and undergoing surgery at a nearby hospital. He was shot in the hip, and his injuries were not life-threatening.

Two other people wounded were in critical condition at the George Washington University Hospital, a spokeswoman said, but the condition of the two others was not immediately known. Texas Rep. Roger Williams, who coaches the GOP team, said a member of his staff was shot and was receiving medical attention.

The gunman had a rifle and "a lot of ammo," said Sen. Jeff Flake of Arizona, who was at the practice.

President Donald Trump said he was "deeply saddened by this tragedy" and was monitoring developments. The House cancelled proceedings for the day.

The shocking event occurred at a popular park and baseball complex in Alexandria, Virginia, where Republican lawmakers and others were gathered for a morning practice about 7 a.m. They were in good spirits despite the heat and humidity as they prepared for the congressional baseball match that pits Republicans against Democrats. The popular annual face-off was scheduled for Thursday evening at Nationals Park across the Potomac River in Washington.

The team was taking batting practice when gunshots rang out and chaos erupted.

Scalise was fielding balls on second base when he was shot, according to lawmakers present, then dragged himself into the outfield to get away from the gunman.

Rep. Mo Brooks, an Alabama Republican, said his colleague "crawled into the outfield, leaving a trail of blood."

"We started giving him the liquids, I put pressure on his wound in his hip," Brooks said.

Texas Rep. Joe Barton, still in his baseball uniform, told reporters a shooter came out to the practice and opened fire, shooting at Rep. Trent Kelly, R-Miss., who plays third base.

"He shot at Steve Scalise, our second baseman. He hit Steve Scalise," Barton said, "Scalise's security detail and the Capitol Hill police immediately returned fire, and Alexandria Police also immediately came and began to return fire. They shot the shooter. The security detail saved a lot of lives because they attacked the shooter."
Politics in Washington is never dull, but as Congress arrived back to Capitol Hill this week, Speaker Mike Johnson faced a particularly long list of priorities to tackle, with a razor-thin margin in the House and a potential threat of ouster. After a previous attempt failed, he secured a narrow "yes" vote to extend parts of the powerful Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, or FISA.

In Arizona, the Supreme Court this week said it would allow the enforcement of a 160-year-old near-total abortion ban. The ruling has put abortion front and center in the key battleground state, as the issue dominates the run-up to the 2024 election. Former President Donald Trump this week reaffirmed his support of the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, but he released a statement softening his stance on the most hard-line abortion restrictions. In a back and forth with reporters, he called Arizona's upcoming state ban "too extreme."

In this episode of PBS News Weekly, correspondent Ali Rogin walks through the biggest political headlines of the week, including President Joe Biden's new plans to cancel student debt, and a special honor for the women who inspired 'Rosie the Riveter.'

In the US state of Florida, the Republican governor Ron DeSantis is on a mission, some say to become the next US president, he says to fight the woke agenda. He broadly refers to 'woke' as the extreme left-wing progressives who he says are intent on smoking out America's innate social injustices --and if you dare to disagree, you get cancelled. With politicians like DeSantis declaring a 'war on woke,' America's politics seem as polarized as ever.

Crooked believes that we need a better conversation about politics, culture, and the world around us—one that doesn’t just focus on what’s broken, but what we can do to fix it. At a time when it’s increasingly easy to feel cynical or hopeless, former Obama staffers Jon Favreau, Jon Lovett, and Tommy Vietor have created a place where people can have sane conversations that inform, entertain, and inspire action. In 2017 they started Crooked with Pod Save America—a no-bullshit conversation about politics. Since then, we continue to add shows, voices, and opportunities for activism, because it’s up to all of us to do our part to build a better world. That’s it. End of mission.

Campaigning has drawn to a close in Mexico ahead of the general elections on June 2nd. People will cast their ballots for a new president and choose local lawmakers, mayors and council members. It will be the biggest ever election in Mexico's history - ending a campaign that has been its most violent.
The last-minute campaigning was once again accompanied by violence. On Thursday, gunmen shot dead a mayoral candidate in the southern state of Guerrero. Alfredo Cabrera was at a campaign rally when he was approached and shot several times at point-blank range. His death brought the number of politicians who have been murdered during their campaigns to well over 20.

Dozens of lawmakers stormed out of Britain's parliament on Wednesday with tempers flaring as the three biggest political parties sought to outmanoeuvre each other over a vote on a ceasefire in Gaza. The uproar followed a decision by the speaker to ignore precedent and allow a vote which helped the opposition Labour Party avoid a large-scale rebellion among its own lawmakers over its position on the Israel-Hamas war. Lawmakers from the governing Conservatives and the opposition Scottish National Party (SNP) left the debating chamber in protest and some tried to take the rare step of holding proceedings in private. The speaker, Lindsay Hoyle, eventually apologised and said he had made his decision to allow lawmakers to vote on a range of views because he was concerned about their security after some had faced threats of violence over their stance on the war.

Police in Germany have arrested 25 people who are accused of plotting to overthrow the government.

A group of far-right and ex-military figures are said to have prepared for a "Day X" to storm the Reichstag parliament building in Berlin, and seize power.

It is alleged a minor aristocrat, a judge, and military personnel were among those arrested, as 150 police operations were carried out in 11 of Germany’s 16 states.

The plotters are also said to include members of the extremist Reichsbürger [Citizens of the Reich] movement, and the QAnon movement.
