Former foreign minister Alexander Downer has speculated that US President Joe Biden will likely be "persuaded to step down" following his trainwreck performance last week.

The US President, who was holding the railing tightly, tested positive for Covid-19 while visiting Las Vegas.

He will self-isolate at his beach house after experiencing mild symptoms, said the White House.

Mr Biden was forced to cancel a speech due to the diagnosis and “is experiencing mild symptoms”.

It is unclear how long the sickness would keep him for the campaign trail.

WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden, in a letter to congressional Democrats, stood firm against calls for him to drop his candidacy and called for an “end” to the intraparty drama that has torn apart Democrats since his dismal public debate performance.

Biden's efforts to shore up a deeply anxious Democratic Party came Monday as lawmakers are returning to Washington and confronting a choice: decide whether to work to revive his campaign or edge out the party leader, a make-or-break time for his reelection and their own political futures.

Biden wrote in the two-page letter that “the question of how to move forward has been well-aired for over a week now. And it’s time for it to end.” He stressed that the party has “one job,” which is to defeat presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump in November.

“We have 42 days to the Democratic Convention and 119 days to the general election,” Biden said in the letter, distributed by his reelection campaign. “Any weakening of resolve or lack of clarity about the task ahead only helps Trump and hurts us. It’s time to come together, move forward as a unified party, and defeat Donald Trump.”

He followed up the letter with a phone interview with MSNBC's “Morning Joe” show, on which he insisted that “average Democrats” want him to stay in the race and said he was “frustrated” by the calls from party officials for him to step aside.

“They’re big names, but I don't care what those big names think," Biden said.

Dr. Jill Biden led the 81-year-old president off stage by the hand after last night's debate performance. Biden appeared more energized at a Waffle House after the debate. Now, some say it's up to her and others close to him to persuade Biden to end his bid for a second term. One front-runner to replace Biden on the ticket is California Governor Gavin Newsom. If the president is persuaded to end his campaign a new candidate would be chosen at the Democratic Convention in August in Chicago.

President Biden has insisted that he can still win November’s presidential election despite an abject debate performance against Donald Trump that has left senior figures in his Democratic party questioning whether he should remain as their candidate.

Biden, 81, told a rally in North Carolina, a key swing state: “I’m here in North Carolina for one reason. Because I intend to win this state in November. And if we win here, we win the election.”

The president tacitly admitted that he had lost the debate against Trump, 78, on Thursday night, but insisted, in a more energetic performance, that he was still the right man to be president.
