Sky News Senior Political Reporter Trudy McIntosh says US President Joe Biden previously noted only “God almighty” could make him quit the race for presidency but now concedes medical advice from doctors would also make him consider pulling out.
“In his first interview since that big disastrous debate he said only God almighty could tell him to get out of the race,” Ms McIntosh told Sky News host Peta Credlin.
“Here we are now, it is a mere mortal, just a doctor and he says he would change his mind, that is an in for Democrats who are privately harbouring huge concerns about Joe Biden remaining on the top of the ticket.”
Former White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney has speculated on whether US President Joe Biden will make it to the Democratic National Convention in a month's time.
“It’s not lost on me that this morning Joe Biden gave an interview saying the only thing that would get him out of the race was a serious illness,” Mr Mulvaney told Sky News US Politics Analyst Joe Hockey.
“And then afternoon, he announced he had COVID – it’s not lost on me.”
US President Joe Biden has addressed the media and responded to the incident at Donald Trump’s Pennsylvania rally where the Republican nominee was reportedly injured.
“There’s no place in America for this kind of violence – it’s sick,” he said.
“He should have been able to be conducted peacefully without any problem, but the idea that there is political violence or violence like this in America is just unheard of. It is just not appropriate.
“Everybody must condemn it.”

Joe Biden's campaign has acknowledged there is "slippage" in support for the president, but repeated his determination to stand for reelection in November.
Campaign chair Jen O’Malley Dillion acknowledged a "slippage" in support for the president, but insisted he is "absolutely" remaining in the race and that the campaign sees "multiple paths" to beating Trump.
"We have a lot of work to do to reassure the American people that yes he's old, but he can win," she told MSNBC's Morning Joe show on Friday.

Two videos of Biden, already famous for gaffes, are doing rounds on social media giving ammunition to the Republican trolls. In the first video, he was seen awkwardly saluting Italy's Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni after he arrived for the G7 summit on Thursday. Social media users swiftly shared videos of the awkward salutation, which went viral. While some considered Biden's move out of touch, others applauded him for showing his Italian counterpart some dignity. Meloni, however, seemed unperturbed by the gesture and continued with her engagements.

The president's latest flub adds to growing concerns about the extent of his cognitive decline.

Zugleich macht ihm seine Gesundheit zu schaffen. Nach einem positiven Coronatest musste der 81-Jährige am Mittwoch eine Wahlkampfreise im Bundesstaat Nevada abbrechen. Der Demokrat zog sich mit leichten Symptomen in sein Privathaus in Rehoboth im Bundesstaat Delaware zurück.
Nach dem Attentat auf den Republikaner Donald Trump bei einem Wahlkampfauftritt am Wochenende war die Debatte über Bidens Kandidatur kurzzeitig in den Hintergrund gerückt. Nun ist sie zurück.
Nach mehreren anderen Parteikollegen rief der prominente demokratische Abgeordnete aus dem Repräsentantenhaus, Adam Schiff, den 81-Jährigen auf, aus dem Präsidentschaftsrennen auszusteigen. Die beiden Top-Demokraten im US-Kongresses, Hakeem Jeffries und Chuck Schumer, warnten Biden übereinstimmenden Medienberichten bereits in der vergangenen Woche davor, an seiner Präsidentschaftsbewerbung festzuhalten.
Biden hat bislang alle Rückzugsforderungen zurückgewiesen und klargemacht, dass er nicht vorhat, hinzuschmeißen.
Der Demokrat steht wegen seines hohen Alters und Zweifeln an seiner geistigen Verfassung massiv unter Druck aus den eigenen Reihen. Seit einem desaströsen Auftritt bei einem Fernsehduell gegen seinen Kontrahenten Trump forderten ihn in den vergangenen Wochen diverse demokratische Abgeordnete auf, aus dem Präsidentschaftsrennen auszusteigen. Viele weitere äußerten sich öffentlich sehr besorgt über seine Wahl-Chancen.
Berichte: Top-Demokraten im Kongress warnten Biden
Auch auf höchster Ebene bereitet Bidens Beharrlichkeit offenbar Sorgen. Sowohl Schumer, Mehrheitsführer im Senat, als auch Jeffries, Minderheitsführer im Repräsentantenhaus, hätten in der vergangenen Woche separat Gespräche mit Biden geführt und davor gewarnt, dass Bidens Festhalten an seiner Präsidentschaftsbewerbung dazu führen könne, dass die Demokraten die Kontrolle über beide Kongresskammern verlieren könnten.
Das berichteten die «Washington Post» und ABC News unter Berufung auf anonyme Quellen, die mit der Angelegenheit vertraut sind. Schumers Büro teilte als Reaktion auf die Berichte am Mittwoch mit, der Senator habe Biden die Ansichten seiner Fraktion übermittelt. Solange die Quelle nicht Schumer oder Biden heiße, bewege sich Berichterstattung im Bereich der Spekulation.
Neben dem Präsidentenamt werden bei der Wahl im November auch viele Sitze im Parlament neu vergeben. Das gesamte Repräsentantenhaus wird neu gewählt, im Senat steht ein Drittel der Sitze zur Wahl. Die Demokraten fürchten, dass die Republikaner nach der Wahl sowohl beide Kammern im Kongress als auch das Weiße Haus kontrollieren könnte. Etliche Parlamentarier haben Sorge, dass die fehlende Unterstützung für Biden auch sie die Wiederwahl kosten könnte.
Positiver Coronatest und Wahlkampfabbruch
Biden, der nach der Wahl im November im Amt bestätigt werden will, war am Mittwoch in Las Vegas unterwegs, um vor allem bei der hispanischen Bevölkerung um Stimmen zu werben. Dort legte er zunächst in einem mexikanischen Restaurant einen Stopp ein, um mit Wählern in Kontakt zu kommen. Danach wollte er bei einer Konferenz einer wichtigen Bürgerrechtsorganisation, die die Interessen der hispanischen Bevölkerung vertritt, auftreten. Dazu kam es aber nicht. Auch ein weiterer Termin musste abgesagt werden.

Former US president Barack Obama has reportedly joined a chorus of high-profile Democrats questioning the viability of Joe Biden's re-election bid.
This comes after it was reported former House speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate majority leader Chuck Schumer raised concerns over the president’s ability to win in November.
Joe Biden has continued to resist mounting pressure to step aside.

Der kollektive Druck von US-Demokraten auf Präsident Joe Biden wird immer stärker. Allein am Freitag wagten sich etwa ein Dutzend weitere Demokraten aus dem US-Kongress vor, um ihren Parteikollegen öffentlich zum Ausstieg aus dem Präsidentschaftsrennen aufzufordern. Auch der Ton wird dabei rauer. So legte ein Abgeordneter offen, wie Biden ihn jüngst bei einer Begegnung nicht mehr erkannt habe.
Der Amtsinhaber, der sich derzeit wegen einer Corona-Infektion isoliert und öffentlich nicht auftritt, gibt sich nach außen hin bislang unbeeindruckt von der parteiinternen Rebellion und kündigte für die kommende Woche seine Rückkehr auf die Wahlkampf-Bühne an. US-Medien zufolge schließt der 81-Jährige angesichts des enormen Widerstandes in den eigenen Reihen insgeheim einen Rückzug aber nicht mehr kategorisch aus.
Die Zahl der Kritiker wächst unaufhörlich
Hintergrund der Revolte sind Zweifel an der geistigen Fitness des Präsidenten - und seiner Fähigkeit, sein Amt weitere vier Jahre auszuüben. Eine neue Welle an demokratischen Kongressabgeordneten äußerte am Freitag Sorge, dass Biden die Präsidentenwahl gegen seinen republikanischen Kontrahenten Donald Trump verlieren und die Partei womöglich künftig in keiner der beiden Parlamentskammern mehr das Sagen haben dürfte. Mittlerweile haben etwa drei Dutzend Parlamentarier aus beiden Kammern Biden offen dazu aufgerufen, aus dem Rennen um eine zweite Amtszeit auszusteigen.
Hinter den Kulissen versucht Medienberichten zufolge auch die allererste Reihe der Partei, Biden zum Rückzug zu bewegen, darunter die beiden Top-Demokraten aus dem Kongress, Chuck Schumer und Hakeem Jeffries, wie auch die frühere Vorsitzende des Repräsentantenhauses und weiterhin einflussreiche Demokratin, Nancy Pelosi. Bidens früherer Chef, Ex-Präsident Barack Obama soll ebenfalls Bedenken geäußert haben. Unter jenen Demokraten, die sich mit öffentlichen Rückzugsforderungen vorgewagt haben, sind mehrere enge Verbündete Pelosis.
Die konzertierte Aktion aus der eigenen Partei ist bemerkenswert. Auch die Tatsache, dass nichtöffentliche Wortmeldungen der einflussreichsten Demokraten im Land in den vergangenen Tagen parallel nach außen drangen, dürfte kein Zufall sein.
«Zum ersten Mal schien er mich nicht zu erkennen»
Der demokratische Abgeordnete Seth Moulton aus dem Bundesstaat Massachusetts beschrieb in seiner Rückzugsforderung eine Begegnung mit Biden am Rande der Feierlichkeiten zum 80. Jahrestag des D-Days. «Zum ersten Mal schien er mich nicht zu erkennen», schrieb Moulton. Das könne zwar mit zunehmendem Alter passieren, er glaube aber, dass seine Erfahrung in der Normandie «Teil eines tieferen Problems» sei.
Biden hat sich nach einer Infektion mit dem Coronavirus in sein Privathaus in Rehoboth Delaware zurückgezogen. Er nimmt derzeit keine Termine wahr. Öffentlich hat er alle Rückzugsforderungen bislang entschieden zurückgewiesen. Auch sein Wahlkampfteam betont beharrlich, er habe nicht vor, hinzuschmeißen.
Rückkehr auf die Wahlkampfbühne?
Der Arzt des Präsidenten teilte mit, die Covid-Symptome bei Biden hätten sich bereits deutlich gebessert. Biden kündigte an, er wolle in den nächsten Tagen wieder Wahlkampf machen. «Ich freue mich darauf, nächste Woche wieder auf die Wahlkampftour zu gehen», hieß es in einer schriftlichen Stellungnahme des US-Präsidenten. Er wolle bei den Menschen im Land weiter vor der Gefahr durch die Politik Trumps warnen und gleichzeitig für seine eigene Vision für das Land werben. «Es steht viel auf dem Spiel», mahnte er und rief seine Partei einmal mehr zu Geschlossenheit auf: «Gemeinsam werden wir gewinnen.»

“He’s having to pause – it’s almost like he’s in slow motion but that’s not in slow motion,” she said.

LIVE: Biden returns to campaign trail with speech to NAACP
Joe Biden struggled to read from a teleprompter on Tuesday, muddling the announcement of a major new policy.
The US president, 81, spoke at the NAACP national convention in Nevada, where he was expected to announce a new 5 percent cap on rental increases nationwide, but instead mistakenly said he would be capping raises of rent to just $55.
Mr Biden has heavily relied on teleprompters during public appearances, often trailing off and losing track of his thoughts without one.
But the president on Tuesday appeared to lack sufficiently good eyesight to decipher what was on the screen in front of him.
